About

Echo for Life™ offers bilingual workshops facilitated by Steve Jourdain, a Canadian Armed Forces Veteran who served for 31 years. Our in-person music workshops are bilingual, free, and open to Veterans of the Canadian Armed Forces and Royal Canadian Mounted Police who have been impacted by trauma, stress, or emotional challenges. Participants with or without experience are welcome to come together to learn to play guitar and write songs to express emotion. Guitars are included, but you are more than welcome to bring your own if you prefer!

Steve Jourdain

Col(Ret), MSM, CD, Veteran Partner and Echo for Life Project Director

Steve Jourdain, a native of Shawinigan, Québec, served as an infantry officer with the Royal 22e Régiment and accumulated more than thirty years of distinguished military service. Throughout his career, he deployed to Haiti, Ex-Yugoslavia, and Afghanistan, where he commanded a company in combat and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for his exceptional leadership under fire. He also had the privilege of commanding the Royal 22e Régiment’s Third Battalion from 2012 to 2014, leading one of Canada’s most storied infantry units.

After serving a year as the Division Chief of Operations, Steve was promoted to his current rank and employed as Division Chief of Staff from 2015 to 2016. He was later posted to Army Headquarters as the Joint Counter Explosive Threat Task Force Commander from 2017 to 2020, where he led critical efforts to protect Canadian Armed Forces personnel from improvised explosive devices and other threats. He retired from military service in February 2022 as the Director for Defence Enterprise Modernization with ADM (DIA).

Steve holds a Master of Arts in War Studies and is the author of “Mon Afghanistan,” a compelling account of his combat experiences released in April 2013 by Athéna Éditions. The book offers readers an intimate perspective on modern warfare and the human dimensions of military service.

Since his retirement, he has continued his lifelong commitment to serving the military community. He currently works for Canadian Forces Morale and Welfare Services, an organization dedicated to supporting soldiers and their families through programs and services that enhance quality of life, promote resilience, and strengthen military communities across Canada. In this role, he remains connected to the men and women in uniform, ensuring they receive the support they deserve both during and after their service.

Beyond his professional work, Steve has channeled his passion for helping veterans into founding Echo for Life, a not-for-profit organization that provides guitar lessons to veterans suffering from mental health issues. Recognizing the therapeutic power of music and creative expression, Echo for Life offers veterans a unique pathway to healing, connection, and personal growth. The organization reflects Colonel Jourdain’s deep understanding of the challenges veterans face in transition and his innovative approach to addressing mental health through accessible, meaningful programs.

Throughout his career and into his post-military life, Steve has demonstrated unwavering dedication to the well-being of Canada’s military personnel and veterans. From commanding troops in combat zones to leading organizational transformation efforts, and now through his work with CFMWS and Echo for Life, he continues to make a lasting impact on the lives of those who serve and have served. His combination of operational experience, leadership expertise, and genuine compassion for veterans positions him as a respected voice in both military and veteran support communities.
